IN THE FIELD - Egypt

From visiting the museums of Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza to the stunning ancient temples that have stood the sands of time along The Nile, the tour of Egypt was one of the most amazing trips that we have embarked on.  Here are some of those "behind the scenes" images of our adventure.

The Streets of CAIRO (Egypt)

From the volcanic islands of The Galápagos to the Streets of Cairo, Egypt, the adventures never stop.  Honestly, it sometimes feels like an adventure movie... you know the one.  I just can't say it on a public forum without copyright permission.

As we walked through the bazaars in Cairo, observing the people, the atmosphere, the products being sold, enjoying the local food and traditions... it felt surreal.  We were living a daily life on the streets of Cairo... what a beautiful thing, what a beautiful place.  The people were genuine and friendly... especially the owner of the spice shop (below right).  He gave me an education on the traditional spices used in Egyptian cooking... and yes, I purchased some spices to use at home.

Like the Galápagos, I look forward to visiting Cairo and Egypt again.

I know... this looks like a staged photo.  But, it wasn't. Since I was a young child I had a fascination with the Ancient Egyptian culture.  As I grew older, I studied the history of Egypt, its people, the culture, and the architecture.  After touring the bowels of the Pyramid of Djoser and ascending the stairs that led down into its tombs, I stood at the entrance looking out and thinking to myself, "What a sight!"  I didn't know that Alley took a photo of me standing in the light of the archway.  This is a great photo... and tells a great story of some things coming full circle for me.

Abu Simbel

Left photo... Alley is playing "hide and seek" in the lower chambers of the step pyramid of Djoser.

Right photo... Abu Simbel was always one of my favorite temples of Ancient Egypt.  It only made sense for me to take a selfie here.

Tunnel of the Great Pyramid

To reach the sarcophagus and tomb of Khufu in the Great Pyramid of Giza, one must crouch down and walk a steep slope of several hundred feet before reaching the chamber.  It was quite the climb, but a great experience.

Nile River Cruise (Egypt)

Most of our 10-day trip to Egypt was spent sailing the Nile River.  Our quarters were very comfortable... we definitely weren't "roughing it."  Most of the sailing was during the night as we moved from one destination to the next.  However, one day of sailing on the Nile was spent experiencing a traditional Egyptian barbecue.  The food was fantastic, as was the experience.  Chef Ahmed, pictured above (bottom right) shared some of his recipes with me, which I have since made at home using some of the spices that I purchased at the bazaar.

The cruise was peaceful and relaxing.  There were only 7 on board plus the crew, which outnumbered the guests.  This made the whole experience very personalized, as our guides attended only to me and Alley.

Alley and The Sphinx

Just a few parting shots from our Egyptian adventure... both pictures were taken in Giza at the site of The Sphinx.  On the left, Alley is talking with our guide who toured with us through the streets and museums of Cairo.  To the right, Alley stands tall with The Sphinx.

Sailing Into The Sunset

Parting shots... Near the end of the Nile River Cruise, we took a private boat tour on The Nile and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.
