Wildlife Comedy
Over the course of my many adventures in the wild I have managed to capture my subjects doing something "unexpected." From frolicking in water or rolling around on the ground, to capturing animals sticking out their tongues or appearing to laugh (or smile), these unexpected moments in nature always bring a smile to my face, and hopefully to yours as well.

Dirt Bath
Wild Horses
Salt River Basin, Arizona

Laughing Stock
Wild Horses
Valley of Dreams, New Mexico
Horses are some of the most comical animals. You really don't know what they are going to do. Sometimes, they're docile and just stand there staring at you or continue grazing; while at other times, they'll do something special, like roll around in the dirt ("Dirt Bath") or make some funny faces ("Laughing Stock").

No Parking
American Pronghorn
Custer State Park, South Dakota

Resident of Rainier
Marmot
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
It's inevitable. No matter what animal I shoot, it seems that I'm always getting that "magical raspberry"... the TONGUE sticking out. In "No Parking", I was shooting this female American pronghorn when she approached the stake to tell us humans that no vehicles were permitted past that point. I thought at first she was going to rub her head against the post, so I started shooting. However, when I went back to look at the images, she actually LICKED the post!
As for the "resident" marmot of Rainier National Park, I had a perfect view of this animal and took a few shots... but once again, I "got the tongue"!!!

Kisses
White-Tailed Deer
John Chestnut Park, Florida

Peanut Butter
Desert Bighorn Sheep
Zion National Park, Utah
"Kisses" was an easy one. These two white-tailed deer were very engaged in cleaning each other. Although unplanned, I managed to get BOTH animals in mid lick.
As for "Peanut Butter", well... bighorn sheep do the damnedest things! This shot actually reminded me of the facial expressions a horse makes when you give it a little peanut butter, hence the name of this image.

Otter Fun
River Otter
Orlando, Florida

The Winning Number
Common Loon
Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
River otters are comical in nature. Their mannerisms in the water, and on land, makes one scratch their head. I was following this otter when all of a sudden it decided to slide down a slope between the rocks and stand up proud as if to say, "I made it all the way!"
As for the loon, I know that this photo may not "seem" comical, but it actually is. I was shooting several loons off the shoreline near the visitor center at Voyageurs National Park, when this female decided to spread her wings and perform a little show. Later that night we stopped at a local convenience store to grab some sodas and I noticed the logo for the Minnesota Lottery... it was as if this loon posed for the logo!

Say "AHHH!"
Brown Noddy
Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

Rough Day
Cattle Egret
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Florida
This brown noddy was calling to its people when I shot this image. While in the other photo, it appears that this cattle egret had enough and settled in for a nap.

Take The Plunge
Little Blue Heron
Black Point Wildlife Drive, Titusville, Florida

Bad Hair Day
Anhinga
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Florida
In the process of shooting this little blue heron while "on the hunt" for a seafood lunch, it suddenly decided to "take the plunge" to grab its meal. As for the male anhinga to the right, it was a windy day at Wakodahatchee when I captured this image of its head and neck feathers all in a tussle. It sure looks like he needs to comb that "mane" down, and maybe use a little conditioner while he's at it.

Don't Talk Back
Nazca Booby
Genovesa Island, The Galápagos Islands

Time To Bounce
Nazca Booby
Genovesa Island, The Galápagos Islands
Boobies will be boobies! No matter the species, these birds are comical in most everything they do. It doesn't matter if they're walking, resting, feeding, or just being "boobies", there's always an opportunity to capture something "special" when photographing these birds.

Just Chillin'
Galápagos Sea Lion
Genovesa Island, The Galápagos Islands
As I made my way down the beach with camera in hand, two Galágapos Sea Lions emerged from the water, scooted up next to our equipment (and my backpack), and decided to plop down for a nap! "There's nothing like being a pillow"! If my backpack were alive, this is what would've been going through its mind... it was going through mine for sure.
